anti-wrinkle injection

Q: Am I a good candidate?
A: The best candidates for the procedure are those between ages of 25 and 65. In many cases, wrinkles in people over 65 are ‘static’ and do not change when relaxing the face. Other procedures would work better for these patients. Each person is different however, and should undergo a consultation to determine the most effective treatment plan.

Q: How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
A: Anti-wrinkle injections is a non-surgical treatment that smoothes wrinkles on the face, especially around the eye area and the forehead. A series of minute, gentle injections into isolated, specific muscles, blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. The anti-wrinkle injection is a substance made of botulinum toxin Type A, a purified protein derived from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. Anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. An anti-wrinkle injection treatment lasts about 15 to 30 minutes and has virtually no down time – you can even drive yourself home after the appointment.

Q: What do anti-wrinkle injections treat?
A: Anti-wrinkle injections treat dynamic wrinkles, those little annoyances known as frown lines, worry lines, laugh lines and crow's feet. Anti-wrinkle injections block the chemicals that normally signal these muscle groups to contract. By not contracting the muscles are allowed to relax and your dynamic wrinkles begin to smooth away.

Anti-wrinkle injection smoothes, flattens and relaxes:

-

Horizontal creases on the forehead
Vertical creases between the eyes (the glabella area)
Wrinkles on the temple side of the eyes, the ‘crow's feet’
Wrinkles on the sides of the nose, ‘bunny lines’
Wrinkles on the upper lip, pursed lips
Vertical cords on the neck

Anti-wrinkle injections are also used in a variety of medical conditions, including treatment of migraine and tension headache, chronic muscular pain, abnormal facial movements, tremors, and excessive sweating of the palms, soles of the feet and underarms.

Q: What are anti-wrinkle injections like?
A: Anti-wrinkle injections are simple, safe and with minimal pain - most patients compare them with a bug bite. Anti-wrinkle injections generally take about 15 to 30 minutes and can be performed in your doctor’s office. Using a tiny micro-needle, a doctor or nurse will inject a minute amount of substance very precisely into several locations on the face. With an anti-wrinkle injection, no sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume most non-strenuous activities immediately. You can even drive yourself home or back to the office.

Results from anti-wrinkle injections normally appear in five to seven days after the procedure and generally last from three to six months.

Q: Does it hurt and what can go wrong?
A: There can be some mild discomfort during an anti-wrinkle injection that some describe as feeling like mild bug bites and generally the procedure is performed without any anesthesia. Some people may experience mild, short-term bruising at the injection site, which covers easily with make-up. Some people may notice a mild headache, which can be simply treated with Panadol. In rare cases, the anti-wrinkle injection can spread beyond the desired area. If the injection in the eyebrow area spreads to the eyelid, there can be a temporary drooping of the upper eyelid, which is treatable with eye drops until it resolves within a few weeks.

Q: What should I expect from anti-wrinkle injections?
A: Anti-wrinkle injections smooth dynamic wrinkles and results are usually seen five to seven days after treatment and last three to six months.

First, your doctor will take a complete medical history to establish that a patient is a good candidate for anti-wrinkle injections treatment. Then, he or she will determine which areas of your face may benefit from anti-wrinkle injections. Most procedures take place in a doctor's office and last 15 to 30 minutes. Immediately after the procedure you should stay upright for three to four hours and avoid rubbing the injection sites to prevent the substance from moving to other muscles in the face. Your doctor may recommend that you perform facial exercises that he or she will demonstrate for you. You can continue with all of your activities the day following the injection.

The degree of improvement varies from person to person, but the results last for three to six months. With subsequent treatments, the results tend to last longer. The treatment will need to be repeated to maintain the result. Repeat treatment is recommended when movement in the area starts to return.

Q: What happens as treatment begins to wear off?
A: As the anti-wrinkle injection wears off the wrinkles will begin to reappear but frequently they are not as deep or noticeable. To maintain the smooth, youthful appearance year round, it requires three to four injections. With repeat treatments, the effects tend to last longer thus requiring fewer injections.

Q: Is there any downtime?
A: No. Most people return to work or normally activities immediately following treatment. It is recommended however, that you avoid exercise, heavy lifting and massaging the injected area injected for one day.

chemical peels

Q: What Is a Chemical Peel?
A: The best candidates for the procedure are those between ages of 25 and 65. In many cases, wrinkles in people over 65 are ‘static’ and do not change when relaxing the face. Other procedures would work better for these patients. Each person is different however, and should undergo a consultation to determine the most effective treatment plan.

Q: What type of peel is right for me?
A: At CosmeticCulture, we offer TCA, Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic Acid peels. The type of treatment, which is right for you, will be determined by you and your doctor or aesthetician to provide you with the greatest benefits. Types of peels we offer:

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
TCA can be used in many concentrations, but it is most commonly used for medium-depth peeling. Fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems are commonly treated with TCA.

Alphahydroxy acids (AHA)
such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels. These types of peels can provide smoother, brighter-looking skin for people who can't spare the time to recover from a phenol or TCA peel. AHA peels may be used to treat fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. Alphahydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, are often mixed with facial washes or creams in lesser concentrations as part of a daily skin-care regimen to improve the skin's texture.

Salicylic acid
a beta-hydroxy acid, is found naturally in willow bark, wintergreen leaves, and sweet birch bark. Formulations containing high concentrations of salicylic acid help slough off dead cells and debris while stimulating the skin’s natural renewal process.

Q: How long do treatments take?
A: Often referred to as ‘lunchtime peels’, these treatments can be performed in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Q: How do chemical peels work?
A: Chemical peels use solutions to peel away the top layers of your skin, revealing new, fresher and smoother skin. Three types of peels are offered, ranging from light ‘lunch hour’ peels designed to provide subtle results with less recovery time to deep peels that provide dramatic results but that take longer to heal.

Q: What do chemical peels treat?
A: All chemical peels reduce fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, scars, age spots and other signs of premature aging. However, the results will depend on the type of peel performed, and in the case of light or medium peels, may require subsequent procedures for more long-lasting results.

Q: What are chemical peel treatments like?
A: Chemical peel treatments are performed on an outpatient basis. We will cleanse the treatment areas and then apply the chemical solution. A slight burning sensation felt for a short period of time, but the solution also works as a mild anesthetic. The depth of the peel will depend on the type of peel decided upon (light, medium or deep), but all peels reveal new, fresher, more youthful skin.

Q: Does it hurt and what can go wrong?
A: Chemical Peels are normally a safe procedure, however, as with any medical procedure, they have some potential risks and complications.

Though the occurrence is rare, any peel can lead to uneven skin pigmentation, infection or scarring. The greatest risk involves over-exposure to the sun. Failure to follow our directions for protecting your skin from the sun can result in uneven skin pigmentation and blotching. Deep peels may pose special risks for patients with a history of heart disease. It's very important to notify us of any previous occurrence of heart ailments when he or she takes your medical history.

Q: What should I expect from chemical peels treatment?
A: The results of a chemical peel will depend on the type of peel that was performed. A light peel will have more subtle results, which will become more visible on subsequent visits, but you will immediately see more vibrant, younger-looking skin. Medium peels will show greater results than light peels, and deep peels show the most dramatic results.

Small flakes or scabs may form to protect the new skin, but are usually easily removed gently with soap and water (we may prescribe healing ointment for use after cleansing your skin). Some people may experience abnormal itching, swelling or tingling. Your surgeon will provide you with medications or directions on how to use cold compresses to minimise this condition.

Q: Is there any downtime?
A: The in-office treatments (light-medium peels) require little or no recovery time. Although there is typically no downtime; after a treatment, depending on the customisation of the procedure, you may experience redness the day of the treatment and minor peeling in the days following the procedure. Depending on your skin you may or may not experience peeling. If peeling occurs, it usually begins 2 to 4 days following your treatment and lasts for approximately 3 days. In addition you may experience mild itching and irritation.

Recovery time also depends on the type of peel performed. Deep peels take weeks to heal and require some bandaging and refraining from strenuous activity. While medium peels may require you to take it easy for a few weeks, bandages are not normally needed. Light peels provide the quickest healing time.

cosmetic fillers

Q: How do cosmetic fillers work?
A: Cosmetic fillers are injected into your skin to push the wrinkle outward, making the skin fuller and the wrinkle less noticeable. The skin is supported and padded. Skin is smoother, creating a more youthful appearance. We offer several types of cosmetic fillers including:
face implants
lip augmentation

Q: What do cosmetic fillers treat?
A: Wrinkle fillers are especially effective on deep lines or wrinkles - the ones you can see even when your face is fully relaxed. They can also be used on any indentation in your skin, such as scars.

Q: What are cosmetic filler treatments like?
A: Cosmetic filler treatments are performed in the office. Anesthesia and topical creams are used to numb the treatment area. Cosmetic filler is then injected, using a very thin needle, and results can be seen immediately. You can get back to your normal activities the following day.

Q: Does it hurt and what can go wrong?
A: Serious complications from wrinkle fillers are rare. Swelling, redness and tenderness might occur, but minimise over a few days.

Q: What should I expect from cosmetic filler treatment?
A: There is no pain after the injection. Immediately after the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears within a few days.

The length of time of wrinkle correction varies depending upon the filler used and the severity of the wrinkle. For severe wrinkles, surgery is necessary to get the best and longest-lasting improvement.

laser hair removal

Q: Who can be treated?
A: The unique design and both short and long wavelengths allow the lasers to treat patients of all skin tones and types including African American, Asian, Indian, Hispanic, Caucasian, and even patients with a suntan!

Q: How old do you have to be for laser hair removal?
A: There really is no age limit, but we never treat toddlers. Young people that are not finished growing will develop new hair as they grow, and will require touch ups to maintain the results. We currently do not treat children under the age of 13. Older people usually have gray hair that will not respond to laser.

Q: How does laser hair removal work?
A: Laser hair removal goes right to the root of an unwanted hair problem: the hair follicle itself. Laser hair removal disables the follicle's ability to produce any more hair. Our laser hair removal systems emit a precise beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where the energy is absorbed by melanin (or pigment) that gives colour to the hair shaft. The lasers’ energy is then absorbed by the pigment in the hair and transferred to the surrounding hair follicle. Results with laser hair removal can depend on the darkness of the hair and the stage of growth of the hair follicle - these things will determine the number of sessions required remove all the unwanted hair.

Hair must be in a growth stage during treatment, one of the reasons why laser hair removal requires several sessions: all follicles are not in the same stage at the same time. Plus, stages can last anywhere between 2 to 6 months. The three stages of hair growth are growth (anagen), regression (catagen) and resting (telogen).

Q: What is the difference between pulsed light and lasers?
A: Pulsed light is not laser. While pulsed light is effective and can be used for other services, our experience supports the more powerful laser treatment for hair removal. Pulsed light is generally less safe for darker skin colours.

Our experienced practitioners select the best laser for customising an individual's treatment to their specific hair colour and skin type.

Q: What does laser hair removal treat?
A: Laser hair removal treats unwanted hair. The quickness of the treatment, combined with the long-lasting effects and large areas that you can treat at one session, definitely make it the solution of choice for thousands of people. Laser hair removal works on the face, armpits, bikini areas, back, legs, arms and chest. Dark hair is more successfully treated than light hair and hair must be in an active growth stage.

Benefits of laser hair removal:
-
-
-
-
No more irritation from shaving or cream
Large areas treated at one time
Sessions are short
Most parts of the body treatable

Q: What are laser hair removal treatments like?
A: Sessions happen in office in a relaxing setting. The area to be treated is cleansed before the laser process begins. A wand or hand piece goes over the treatment area and delivers the light of the laser. Some people describe the laser treatment as feeling like a mild sting or pinching sensation, however anesthesia is usually not required. Most treatments last about 15 minutes with further sessions every 3 to 6 weeks; treatment duration and intervals depend on the size and location of the treatment area.

Q: Does it hurt and what can go wrong?
A: Laser hair removal is a very safe treatment with few side effects. Everyone's pain tolerance is different. People have compared it to a rubber band snap against the skin, whilst others describe the actual therapy as feeling like mild stinging or pinching, but this discomfort subsides when each treatment ends. Some people experience temporary redness or swelling after treatment. Very rarely blistering can happen.

Q: What should I expect from laser hair removal treatment?
A: Laser hair removal reduces unwanted hair. You will see results immediately after each session, with less and less hair growth happening during the weeks after each session. Results depend on hair colour, density, and the area that is treated. Maintenance appointments are encouraged to target hair that was in a dormant stage during previous sessions.

Q: What areas can be treated?
A: Laser hair removal can be performed on almost area of the body for men and women – from small areas such as your upper lip, underarms, bikini area, chin, neck, and face, to larger areas such as arms, chest, back, and legs.

Q: Why is laser preferred for hair removal?
A: Most people are great candidates. Traditional hair removal techniques, such as shaving, plucking and waxing, provide only temporary relief. Until now, the only long-lasting hair removal solution has been by electrolysis - which can be time-consuming and is usually limited to small areas, because each hair is treated individually. Laser hair removal is non-invasive, and safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. Facial and bikini area sessions are usually completed in less than 20 minutes; legs and larger areas can take longer.

One significant advantage of laser hair removal treatment is that it affects a large number of hair follicles at once resulting is a quicker more permanent results. As a general rule, several treatments will be required and you and can expect to see a 50% reduction in hair growth after just one treatment. If you hate shaving, or are tired of putting up with painful waxing, tweezing or electrolysis, laser hair removal may be the best solution for you.

Q: Will laser hair removal work for me?
A: The best results have been achieved on darker, coarse hair, but other factors may influence the treatment process, and are generally best evaluated and discussed in person. Depending on the amount of hair and area treated, the procedure varies from patient to patient. Generally, the treatment will begin by trimming away the hair above the skin to be treated. Protective glasses will be provided to protect your eyes from the laser's bright light. The laser's hand piece will then be applied to the skin to deliver the pulses of light needed to begin disabling your unwanted hair.

Q: Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?
A: You can return to work or resume normal activities immediately following your procedure. However, since some redness may occur, you may want to plan your work or social engagements accordingly. This may last from a few minutes to several days depending on the area and skin sensitivity.

Q: What precautions should be taken before and after treatment?
A: You must stop plucking or waxing hair for several weeks for laser to be optimally effective. We have a variety of lasers to safely treat all skin types and skin colours including dark and tanned skin. Our highly trained professionals educate you on your options and tailor a treatment program that best suits your personal needs. Together you and the laser specialist can decide if your expectations will be met and which treatment is the best option for you.

Q: How many treatments will I need?
A: Hair grows in cycles. The laser is only effective on hair in its actively growing cycle. At any one time there will only be certain hairs in that growing phase. This means that consistent treatments at appropriate intervals are absolutely necessary for the best possible results. The number of treatments required depends upon your skin, hair colouring, coarseness of the hair and density per treated area. Multiple treatments may be required.

The laser hair removal system causes permanent reduction in the number of hairs growing in an area. Because hair grows in three phases, and each hair goes through these stages independently, it is almost impossible for one laser treatment to permanently reduce all hair in a given area. Clinical studies, which have followed patients for one year after completing two treatments, have shown that reduction in hair growth was stable for the duration of that time. While individual results may vary, patients typically find that it takes 3 to 6 treatments to get the desired results.

Q: What is a full Brazilian?
A: A full brazilian bikini procedure is perfect for those who have a preference for nothing more than a neat strip of hair. Yes, a full Brazilian is that extensive with some guests opting for no pubic hair whatsoever. These procedures are our fastest growing because many women love the idea of not having to worry about bikini bumps and ingrown hairs. Others just love that fresh, clean feeling every single day of the year, or perhaps they are addicted to lower cut clothing. Either way, not having to bring a razor on your next vacation or having to pay a lot of money on temporary solutions like waxing are key reasons for the influx of requests. If you have sensitive skin or just want to take a precautionary step, we offer a prescription anesthetic cream. Moreover, when this treatment is performed on a female, they are always paired with a female nurse.

facial hair removal

Q: What happens to facial hair as we age?
A: Female facial hair tends to worsen with age. This is because as a woman's skin ages, many facial hairs convert from the essentially invisible type (vellus hairs), which generally cover our face naturally, to the larger, more obtrusive terminal hairs. This is often seen on men as well, especially on their ears. Thus, as hair thickens over the years, more hairs become cosmetically problematic and may require laser treatment.

Q: What about men's facial hair?
A: And guys, if you are tired of taking the time to shave every morning so that you look smooth and professional at work, let CosmeticCulture help you achieve the groomed appearance you’ve always wanted. In addition to eliminating the need for further shaving, this will prevent irritation and the development of pseudo-folliculitis the name medical experts give to painful, inflamed razor bumps so commonly experienced by the male population.

Other facial hair removal methods (for information only, CosmeticCulture does not offer):

Depilatory creams
These creams work by dissolving hair at the base of the follicle. They are better suited for widespread and less sensitive areas like the legs, but can be problematic when used on the face because they irritate the skin and often don't remove all of the hair. The only real upside of depilatory creams are that they are relatively inexpensive. However, on the average, results will last for one to two weeks before one needs to repeat the procedure. Still in the long run, the laser facial hair removal procedure is more cost effective as well as permanent.

Electrolysis
This procedure uses low-level electricity to disable, or render the hair follicles inactive. On the plus side, results last longer than with waxing and depilatories, but the process is time consuming, costly and many say painful due to the hair by hair removal process. Often, it takes years of repetitive treatment and a great deal of expense to achieve the desired result. Finding a reputable practitioner is a little scary because electrolysis, when performed incorrectly, can cause scarring. If you do opt for electrolysis treatment, make sure your doctor or nurse uses a new needle for each session. Remember, at CosmeticCulture we only perform hair removal with laser.

Tweezing
Some women choose to tweeze unwanted hairs, but this isn't an ideal solution because repeated plucking can cause irritation of the hair follicle. On darker-skinned women, tweezing may result in scarring. Also, hair will grow back thicker and stiffer once it's plucked. Unless you have just a few stray hairs that occasionally pop up, avoid tweezing or plucking unwanted hair.

Waxing
This has been one of the most popular solutions for hair removal. Generally, it's an effective method to remove hair on the upper lip and fine vellus hair on the sides of the face, but it's not recommended for the chin area where hair tends to be more coarse. Waxing may also be problematic for darker-skinned women, who sometimes experience discolouration due to irritation and inflammation. Depending on your hair type, waxing results only last from two to six weeks and often require you to grow out the unsightly hair in between treatments.

microdermabrasion

Q: How does microdermabrasion work?
A: If you can think of microdermabrasion like a "superficial skin polishing" that's about right — microcrystals are sprayed at an angle to your skin, sloughing off dead skin while a vacuum suction removes the skin debris and left-over crystals. The procedure is non-invasive and requires no recovery time, though some skin may remain red for up to 24 hours after the treatment. Microdermabrasion treatments remove dead skin and promote both deep skin tissue and collagen rejuvenation which further promote vibrant, youthful looking skin as well as minimizing fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and age spots.

Q: What does microdermabrasion treat?
A: Microdermabrasion treats many signs of prematurely aging skin including fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, chicken pox scars, and enlarged pores. Microdermabrasion gets rid of dull, lackluster skin giving you a more youthful appearance.

Q: What are microdermabrasion treatments like?
A: Microdermabrasion treatments last less than an hour and are on an outpatient basis. An aesthetician will clean your treatment area and then will use a jet sterile microcrystals to gently exfoliate your skin. No anaesthesia is needed. Pressure is adjusted for your skin's needs. The microdermabrasion machine's handpiece is moved across the treatment area delivering a precise stream of crystals onto the skin's surface; the sloughed off skin cells and the leftover crystals are then suctioned off to reveal a fresh, vibrant skin surface. After your treatment, the aesthetician may choose to apply a light acid skin polishing agent or facial mask to optimise your results.

Q: Does it hurt and what can go wrong?
A: Microdermabrasion is noninvasive and as such has a low risk of complications and is one of the safest rejuvenation procedures available. Some people report redness or dry feeling in their skin after a treatment, but this is temporary. Machines used at high power carry the potential risks of hyperpigmentation, perforation, bleeding, and infection.

Some people should not have microdermabrasion. Let your plastic surgeon or aesthetician know if you have undiagnosed lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, acne, active rosacea, unstable diabetes or auto-immune disorders.

Q: What should I expect from microdermabrasion treatment?
A: After the first treatment the skin will have a fresh, radiant glow. Fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots become greatly diminished, and many patients report that their skin seems to be softer, smoother and younger looking. Improvement continues throughout the treatment program, and you'll begin to notice visible results after the third treatment.
